Unit 6: Integration

The purpose of this unit is to promote mechanisms for the development of broadly based collaborative research as the central mode of research activity among the members of the team, as well as between the team and partners. The coordinator is H. Diaz. During the period under report some of the most important activities in this area have been the following:

  1. Development and revision of conceptual and methodological frameworks: The team discussed and developed an integrative conceptual and methodological model to ensure a permanent integration of the project's activities (see Section “The Approach” in this website). This model has played a central role in the organization and implementation of all the project's activities.

  2. Development of information on integrative frameworks: Information is being gathered using GIS and indicator frameworks as integrative tools.

  3. Planning of integrative activities: Significant efforts have been made to integrate all team members, including assistants, in the initial visits to institutions and research sites, as well in the planning of research activities.

  4. Exchange activities-website: The website of the project contains a section that is restricted to project members. This section contains a variety of information designed to keep team members informed of the different developments and implementation of activities.

  5. Exchange activities-annual meetings: Three annual meetings of the project have taken place (University of Regina, April 27-30, 2004; Universidad de La Serena, April 25-29, 2005; and University of Regina, April 24-26, 2006. These meetings have been central for the discussion of integrative activities, assessment of the accomplishments of the project, and planning of future activities.

  6. Exchange activities-internal reports: These internal reports summarize the personal contributions from all team members. Three internal reports have been produced during the first half of the project (May 1-October 31, 2004; November 1, 2004-March 31, 2005; April 1-December 31, 2005).

  7. Exchange activities-teleconferences and others: Several teleconferences took place with the purpose of organizing and delivering the activities of the project.
